Use the same account. If you transfer cash into an account and you say the account you are transferring from is the same account, Quicken will just have the money appear out of nowhere. So if you have an account named "My 401" and you transfer $100 from [My 401] into your My 401 account, the $100 just appears there and doesn't come from anywhere.

At least it does in earlier versions of Quicken (I'm using 2011).

I strongly suspect that originally this was unintended behavior that just accidentally worked in a useful way.

But by now enough people rely on it that they don't dare change it.
