What I'm about to discuss isn't sports related, but it is a FREE fantasy game. The game is called Utopia and it is a medieval-based turn play game (if that makes sense), much like Dungeons and Dragons. The link follows:

http://games2.swirve.com/utopia/

I brought this to the Fool cuz I've been involved with it for about four months and I really like it a lot. I guess the first thing to do is for you to read the guide and see if this is really something you'd like to try. The link is:

http://games2.swirve.com/utopia/help/

If you've browsed the Guide, you'll soon realize that there is a lot to learn and you won't be able to easily make head or tail of it until you really give it a go.

If you decide to create an account you will be randomly assigned a province which is part of a Kingdom. The Kingdom I'm with has active players from Sweden (Vasteras), Austria, Argentina, England, Australia, Spain, among others. For me, anyway, it's really been a worldwide experience. Fortunately, for those of us who speak English, it tis the native tongue that everyone speaks in Utopia - even the foreigners...

A typical Age lasts around twelve weeks but the time frame is ultimately up to a gentleman who runs the site and goes by the name of Mehul. I haven't a clue what his name means, perhaps someone who is up on their medieval history can clue me/us in. That said, we are quickly approaching the end of the current Age (alas, you can join at ANY time).

If you've read the Guide, you'll note that there are a number of different races one can be, as well as a number of different personalities. If you've been privy to the Lord of the Rings trilogy (book and/or movie), you'll have a pretty good understanding of the different folks that inhabit Utopia.

That said, I encourage you to give it a read and if it interests you to sign up. The biggest drawback is that it is an ad-based web site so you WILL be bombarded with pop-up ads. Alas, that is easily dealt with by any number of pop-up blockers. The blocker I use can be downloaded for free at:

http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network/pow.htm

Hopefully those of you who've taken the time to review this post will give Utopia a shot and see if it is something for you. If it is, I'd love to hear from you and will happily offer more details to those who express an interest.

Thanks,
g!

Well, I signed up about a week ago and have tried it out. I'm still getting a feel for it and am not sure whether I'll stick with it or not. I think a big part of the enjoyment probably depends on how interactive a kingdom you're in - mine seems kind of lame, really.

I saw somewhere that I can resign my kingdom and then another king can sweep me into their kingdom... I can't seem to find it now. I also don't recall what the penalties were for doing so. Do you know anything about that? Are you still enjoying the game? I might go for trying to coordinate something so that I can get drafted into your kingdom. Let me know what you know.

You're right! An INTERACTIVE kingdom does make it more fun. If you're not in one, the amount of fun/enjoyment is greatly reduced.

You can find and learn about Defection under Preferences. The biggest thing to remember is that you will lose 15% of everything you own. The other bummer is that your new kingdom is picked at Utopia's discretion - NOT yours... :(

That said, the Age ends tonight (at 1 AM EST) and a new Age will begin in a couple of days. On your Throne page you have one of two options to choose from: "Keep me with this kingdom" or you can "Delete your account" and start over.

My suggestion is that since it's the end of the Age, I would try defecting to a new kingdom. You might end up somewhere with a good close-knit kingdom. One of the easiest ways to determine whether or not you're in a good kingdom would be their NW. If your kingdom's NW is above 4.3M gc that's pretty good. The next step would be to look at the chatter in the forums. If there's a decent amount of activity it might be worth sticking around. I had to jump to a new kingdom before I landed in the one I'm currently in (K: 36:21 SureWould Forest - P: Lacedaemeon).

I'm sticking around for next Age. Alas, my kingdom number and province name will be rendered meaningless next Age cuz the game will change all of our kingdom's information (so that hostilities DON'T carry over Age to Age). In addition, I'll probably have a different name too.

If you stick with it, I'll do what I can to show you the ropes so that you'll have some good success too.

g!

P.S. I've got a spreadsheet for this too... :P

I have tried this a little as well but I don't really know what I'm doing. Any tips you can provide would be helpful. I'm not even sure how to get involved with my kingdom since I'm not sure what value I can add to other's discussions since my province is so small.

On another note, ever since I've been here, I've been bombarded with pop-ups that I wouldn't want to share with anyone even when I'm not on Utopia. How the heck do I prevent all this nonsense?

Now's the time to review the "The Guide." Especially the Races/Personalities section. Keep in mind that the Guide may change a little bit from Age to Age but not very much. Anyway, each race/personality has it's own strengths and weaknesses (check out Actual Numbers) and pick what you think will be the best one...

I was an Elf/Rogue this Age, but I'm leaning toward Dwarf/Merchant and/or Human/Merchant for the next. I'm also partial to the Shepherd and Sage as well. Keep in mind, that the Elite bonus for Dwarves is one of the best. Anyway, I like the immunity to income penalties that a Merchant offers. Gold makes this Utopian world go round and a Human/Merchant will have plenty of it... :)

Some other things I've noted:

- 2% acreage in Hospitals generally protects you from getting the Plague when attacked by or attacking Undead.

- Training Grounds (TGs) appear to be useless. Don't waste your land...

- Mills are good when you're exploring. Afterwards, they are a waste.

- Pick one: Dungeons/Stables. Build only one kind. They both provide roughly the same attack bonus (mathematically speaking). Alas, you need to attack to get prisoners. Keep in mind they will die off if you get the plague. Stables automatically replenish themselves.

- Keep around 4 TPA (Thieves Per Acre) and 1.5 WPA (Wizards Per Acre) around for defense. It's easier to attain the TPA and it really hampers enemy provinces ability to get information about you. I never did get to 1.5 WPA this age. My best was around .65 WPA... :(

- Invest in your Sciences. I recommend spreading your wealth over ALL of them...

On another note, ever since I've been here, I've been bombarded with pop-ups that I wouldn't want to share with anyone even when I'm not on Utopia. How the heck do I prevent all this nonsense?

This should solve most of your problems:

Good browser security also helps...

Thanks. I'll take all of this into consideration. I've read the guide but maybe not well enough. For example, in attacking, how do I know who to attack or whether it would be worth it? Is there a map or something?

I'm getting attacked by someone but I don't really know how to defend myself actively except to build soldiers and some buildings.

I must be missing something.

Cuz you are...

I'm sorry. I made an assumption that folks would fall into active kingdoms where help would be bountiful (bad g!, no kudos for you!). :(

There are two online tools which will provide such details. These two tools can be found at (I didn't include this link in my initial post JIC I was only talking to myself.):

http://www.utopiatemple.com/

If you stay with the game you'll want to put this link in your Favorites as it will become invaluable during your stay. The first online tool is called Angel. You can download it from the link above (along the left-hand-side) and it will provide information overload. Because of this, I DON'T USE IT. However, you will likely meet folks who swear by it.

The second tool, is the All-In-One Formatter (also found along the left-hand-side). I use this tool exclusively cuz there's no downloading involved. All you have to do is cut/paste the information under "post anything here" and press format. If you pasted all the proper information, the Formatter really saves a bundle of time, and makes it VERY easy to post your results to your Kingdom's Forum. FWIW, I use the Formatter in conjunction with my PC's Notepad.

I've formatted Crystal Balls (CBs), Spy on Survey/Science (SoSs), Spy on Military (SoMs) as well as the occasional news clipping (when you get worked over by a Wizzie or Thief). That said, wizards create CBs. Thieves do the rest.

If you are planning an attack or retaliating the most important tools used in planning are the CB and the SoM. The CB will tell you how large the enemy province's military is when it's at home. It will also reveal a number of other interesting secondary details. The SoM, OTOH, will tell you how much of the enemy's military is "at home," how much is returning from battle and about how long till they return.

As an aside, when you get a CB be sure to also note the targetted province's NW and include that in the box immediately following the Formatter. It will give you a rough estimate of the number of thieves/wizzies a province has and give you some gauge of how successful your other acts (spells/ops) will be.

Keep in mind that the CB is 100% accurate with regard to Defensive Specialists) D-Specs, and the SoM is less accurate (NOTE there IS a difference between D-Specs and Elites). It's up to you to determine how accurate the SoM is and to find some middle ground.

The SoSs tell you what your enemy's building strat looks like and how well vested they are in the sciences. The important things to note here are % of Forts and % of War Science. This last Age, Forts provided up to a 10% defensive bonus. Anything over, wouldn't help against the attack but would help determine how successful their/your land grab would be. If you can't get a Survey, I always assumed 10% (for this Age).

The max War Science you could have (this Age) was 16%. I NEVER saw anyone get close to that. I did note a province or two with over 10% but most average around 7% - 9%. Still it helps to do these cuz sometimes the enemy province WON'T have any Forts or VERY low War Science.

This brings me to the other notable links at the Temple. They are Attack Calculator (AC) and Target Finder (TF). You won't need a login for the AC but you will for the TF.

The information you get from the four activities I discussed above plays a role in the AC. This is where you determine if you can successfully attack/retal an opponent.

The TF can be used when your Kingdom is out-of-war (OOW), etc. You can find targets of opportunity to attack in a number of different ways. It is credit based and the credits are earned by surveying other Kingdoms. Alas, you will need a login...

Oops!! The Age ends Tuesday, December 16, at 1AM!!! This means another week (or thereabouts) of constant meteors falling on my province. My people will NOT be pleased... :(
