Vanguard's justification for doing it this way is that the investor doesn't have to pay income tax on the $10. I think it is Vanguard's way of keeping their annual expense low. They can advertize their Fund A has an expense of only 0.25% while competing Fund B is 0.75%. Therefore you should choose our Fund A instead of their Fund B. IF
