The news release from Varian regarding the new Imaging Applications laboratory in Oxford, UK seems odd. I was not aware that Varian Inc. was still focusing on this business. Varian systems probably account for a very tiny part of all the clinical Magnetic Resonance (MR) imaging systems sold in the world. They are dwarfed by the big guns in the business; General Electric, Phillips and Siemens. These clinical imaging giants spend $10's of millions in R&D every year and it shows. These top three appear to have better products, better software and better support. How Varian can compete at this level is hard to understand. Are the Varian MR imaging systems approved as medical devices by the FDA?
