Chavez just devalued the Bolivar by 50%.

That means those who had 'retirement savings' to live from....only have half as much.

Chavez needs to spend more money on social programs in front of the upcoming election....so......he devalued the Bolivar, meaning the oil revenues will go further.......

At the same time, inflation is 'only' expected to be 3-5% worse...because of this..it is already 21% a year...down from 25% last year and 31% the year before...

That also means your savings drops in half every 3 years.

If you live there and are retired early, I hope you had your savings in dollars(illegal) or US stocks (also illegal) or gold bars (also illegal)......otherwise you are wiped out.

That's what happens with a socialist left wing commie government..the type that half of Obama's czars publicly praise and worship.

Don't most wealthy South Americans keep most of their money invested somewhere else?

And of course, George Bush and his happy band of Chickenhawks and Tea-baggers gave us a 50% drop in the stock market.

intercst: "Don't most wealthy South Americans keep most of their money invested somewhere else?"

Yes...usually Miami......with their second and third homes....

and often in gold jewelry, exotic cars, and collectibles......

intercst: " And of course, George Bush and his happy band of Chickenhawks and Tea-baggers gave us a 50% drop in the stock market"

And who was President in 1987 with the stock market drop?

And who was President in 1932 who prolonged a 3 year recession into a 10 year depression? hmmmmm.....

As if the Venezuela stock market didn't have a giant bubble - ???

http://www.latin-focus.com/latinfocus/countries/venezuela/ve...

Hit 62,000...now down to 35,000....or so.....wow.....a 50% drop in the land of socialist paradise about to run out of electricity to run the country.......

And how is the economy in the 'worker's paradise'?

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSN1813852920091119

"GDP shrank 4.5 percent in the third quarter of 2009, a second consecutive three-month contraction that by most economists' definition puts Venezuela in recession."

I'd say that is a depression, not a 'recession'....

And the economy is a 'disaster'......by any other name....

Thus, you encounter T's unsurpassed ability to manipulate his incomprehension of the facts in order to fit his preconceptions.

Though I must admit, his inability to remember what years Saint Ronnie was in office pushes new boundaries. Forgetting that elected presidents don't take office until the following year is quite mundane by comparison.

thanks for making the point that all recessions aren't the fault of "George W Bush"....

He just happened to be President for one of them.

Now, it is Obama in charge and he is doing like FDR...making a short recession into a 10 year depression by his policies....

then passing legislation and passing 'regulations' without the intervention of congress to insure no one retires early and the middle class is destroyed.

I had to change it a bit to correct a type..now it is correct....

Yep......everyone of the libs blame everything in the past, present and future on GWB.......

Thanks for proving that Bush was not president in 1987.....

But we have Obama to praise for taking a minor recession that would have fixed itself in 18 months into a 10 year long depression...

The unemployment is forecast to be 10.8% by next October...election time.

The job losses go up every month...4.5 million and counting UNDER Obama.....

The financial crisis caused by Dodd and Franks....and their buddy buddy deals with Fannie and Freddie...and the 'social justice' run amok.....

At least Dodd is being run out of town. Maybe we can get Franks next election too.....if he is up for re-election.....

It's Obama's depression - he's had it about a year...and it has spiraled downhill ever since he took office....

He hasn't worried the least bit about jobs or protecting the country from terrorists..

Just 'rahming through' his ultra left wing socialist agenda to increases taxes, more taxes and even more taxes....

And I believe that Herbert Hoover was President when the depression started in 1929?

Of course he was. But it's fair to say that most of the problems came about in the administration of Calvin Coolidge; the stock market bubble was obvious to everyone - at the Fed, on Wall Street, in the banking community, to overseas central banks - everyone except Silent Cal, who complained that Hoover (who advised raising rates and popping the bubble on the theory that "falling from 10 stories now would be preferable to falling from 20 stories later) - was ignored.

The depression of 1929 (begun under Republican Hoover) had its genesis under Republican Coolidge. And it contined unabated for 3 years through 1932 under a Republican Congress which refused to do anything about it. Thousands of banks failed, tens of thousands of businesses failed, hundreds of thousands of people were plummeted into abject poverty - to the point where thousands of World War I Army veterans marched on Washington demanding the bonuses they had been promised.

Yes, telegraph manages to ignore actual history in favor of his own made-up version, a version which bears no resemblance to reality in this world. But perhaps he has a hotline to an alternate universe, where things happened as he says they did. It would surely be different. Perhaps there George W. Bush actually did something right!

Most of our problems are easily traced to the 'progessive movement'....

WHich caused the lack of regulation in the 1920s...which caused the recession of 1929 to turn into a major depression.

The stock market crash of 1929 affected only the truly rich. The common man did not or could not trade stocks back then.

IT was the policies of the 'progressives' (aka commies) that followed under FDR that made sure that the country would keep going on a ultra left wing agenda of growing government until it sucked everything out of the private sector.

It was the 'progressives' that caused Freddie and Fannie to self implode with 'social justice' loans.

It's now the 'progressives' who will kill the economy with ever increasing taxes, mandates, taxes, regulation, taxes, manadates, regulation, and bureaucracy...with millions of government 'workers'.....

Only until the ultra left wing progressive tide is turned back will the economy ever have a chance of recovery now.

Few politicians have ever been willing to pop a bubble before it collapsed on it's own. We might look at the history of inflation in the 1960s and 1970s fueled by government spending as an example.

At one point, thew press and academics thought Lyndon Johnson would have to make a choice ---- "guns or butter," and that became a much discussed choice Johnson would have to make. Of course, he chose guns AND butter during one of his state of the union messages.

We have been developing a health care bubble for decades now ---- arguably since Medicare began. Rather than letting that collapse and sort itself out, Democrats are proposing to pump it up a lot more.

Not many politicians are willing to campaign on a theme of "Recession NOW! Only losers, if those.

Oh come on, tele. Stock market trading among average people exploded during the 1920s, and even more important the huge number of bank collapses after 1929 wiped out the savings of huge numbers of people.

The economic collapsed wiped out the jobs of millions more, throwing them out of work.

The stock market collapse and economic collapse that followed was a huge disaster for most of the people in the country.

"the huge number of bank collapses after 1929 wiped out the savings of huge numbers of people.

The economic collapsed wiped out the jobs of millions more, throwing them out of work."

True..... banks collapsed...

But now, instead, tax payers bail out mega trillion dollar entities like Fannie and Freddie who were allowed to give out gazillions in 'social justice' loans...... which then imploded the banking system.....needing trillions more in borrowing...

which wiped out the jobs of 9 million Americans...... throwing them out of work......

More teenagers have been thrown out of work in the last five years than the total number who lost jobs in the progressive caused depression of the 1930s.....

and just like then, the bailouts of every financial institution, of every business that feeds the progressive coffers via unions (ie, the selected 'detroit based' car companies).....have led to an even deeper depression now.

Teenagers can't get jobs. 18-25 year old can't get jobs. Those who have jobs aren't retiring due to impaired savings....

It was the progressives back then, and is still the ultra left wing progressives aiming for yet bigger and bigger government redistribution more and more wealth, running the country further and further into debt, saddling it with 100 trillion in unfunded liabilities.....which will lead to collapse.....

You are seeing it now....the heck with what the people want. It is what the politicians want, the people be damned.

One might look at the Democrat health care bill and indeed ask "What is truth?"

In fact, one of the reasons politics is so important it that power is capable of manufacturing truth, no matter how great a lie it may be.

If you don't know that, you are naive indeed.

I know that you belive that the truth can be manufactured:

http://boards.fool.com/Message.asp?mid=25333940

I believe that there is an objective reality and that facts can be evaluated to weigh the truth or falsity of factual claims.

The defining difference between liberals and conservative is that facts play a role in the decision-making process for liberals, and conservatives believe that ideology trumps reality.

I didn't believe conservatives were that crazy until I started reading posts by you, tele and the posters at conservative fools and FIRE.

It would be funny if you didn't have the power to vote.

"I believe that there is an objective reality and that facts can be evaluated to weigh the truth or falsity of factual claims."

Only when you actually have the facts.

As the world found out with the East Anglica "ClimateGate", the data, and hence the 'facts' can easily be manipulated to show 'increases, where none existed.

In fact, the damning email said "we had to hide the decline"......

Before that, Mann's 'hockey stick' entire creation was deep sixed...Al Gore zipped it out of his world wide presentations...

Oh...and Al Gore conveniently 'left out' the Medieval Warm Period in all his presentations.

It wasn't 'if you can evaluate the truth of the facts'.....it was 'did you actually have all the facts you needed'...and

in the case of the lib sem socialists.....absolutely NOT.

They 'hid them'...when they didn't agree....well, they fudged the data...modified it.....came up with 'new creations' and called it data...

Then conveniently 'lost it' when others requested to use it..

Only in a lib dem world do the elites put 'rose colored glasses' on the masses and foist off 'cooked books' and only part of the facts......

Global Wamring is toast. Europe is suffering one of its worst winters in decades. Temps in Russia are running 10 degrees below the average for the past few decades. The continent is freezing. Trains are stalled. Villages are 'snowed in'.....England is running out of fuel and is on rationing'.

In the US....record cold....614 low temp records last week....only 21 new ones...out west....... that's a 30:1 ratio of record lows...to highs....

40 and 50 and 60 below zero temps.......heating oil is in high demand....NG is being used in record amounts.....

And the lib dems give us 'facts' to evaluate? No, they give us cooked up pablum with phony facts to digest...then tell us , because of that, they are going to lay a trillion bucks in new taxes on us!.....

Tax this...tax the banks...who will turn around and charge us those taxes, of course....tax oil...who will turn around and add the tax to the cost of oil and gas and plastics. Tax tax tax tax.....

The lib dems know no end to taxing..and more taxing. Just read the headlines. Healthcare taxes..>MEdicare taxes going up....taxes on banks...taxes on this...taxes on financial services. You've got taxes on income, taxes on outgo (sales taxes and excise taxes), taxes on airline tickets, taxes oh 'hsspitaltiy' - ie, hotels, motels, eating out, movie theaters, ....every time you turn around there are taxes. Taxes on gas - road tax, this tax. Look at your phone bill.....30% of your phone bill is taxes. 9-1-1 tax. Rural subsidy tax. This tax. Long distance tax. Tax for this. Tax for that. Cable bill - tax for this, tax for that..sales tax.

You want facts? The lib dems are killing us with regulations, taxes, surcharges, uber-control, declarations, mandates.......

The economy is still in big trouble. Jobs are fleeing and disappearing. 17.3% unemployment and under employment and that is on the low side. Probably 20%....

That last paragraph is full of facts. Digest it...then commiserate with how bad Obama is 'leading' the country ....straight down the wrong path.....

The defining difference between liberals and conservative is that facts play a role in the decision-making process for liberals, and conservatives believe that ideology trumps reality.

I don't believe this is true.

Oh, sure, the people you're talking about specifically think that reality is unimportant. But I don't think this is a defining characteristic of conservatives in general, and I've known liberals who care more about ideology than reality. Truth is, reality-denying fanatics come in all flavors.

For example, there's one rather liberal-leaning poster who I put on my Ignore list because he stated, flat out, that he wanted a world with no humans in it. That's the voice of insanity speaking.

<<I believe that there is an objective reality and that facts can be evaluated to weigh the truth or falsity of factual claims.
>>

Power and politics rather regularly overwhelm the facts and the truth. Nothing is more common than for the truth to be buried during political disputes, often by both sides.

Your faith in some objective truth is touching, but is often going to be naive when powerful interest groups are jostling for power.

No..that's the normal eco-whacks.

No wind energy (kills birds)...no solar (kills desert crtiters).....and needs powerlines which ruin habitats.

No water power.

No nukes. No oil. No natural gas. NO energy......

Then there are the food freakies...no this. no that. Can't use fertilizers.... who cares if we only grow half as much food or 1/10th as much..it will be organic...and no meat...that methane from cows burping is killing polar bears..... and no poultry..can't torture those chickens.. No hunting. No fishing.

The lib dems are the ones out to eliminate 80% of the population. The George Soros one-worlders have already said the world can only support 2 billion people. They are out to prove it.

Cap and Trade will do it.

You are right. My hyperbole was the result of irritation with a very few posters and it's my fault that I let them out of the peebox in the first place.

NO..it just goes to show you can't blame everything on George W Bush....as lthe liberals try to do.

Of course, after a year, it is now the Obama Depression and getting worse. More and more job losses.

And we'll be just like Spain, where every 'green job' caused 2.5 non-green jobs to be lost...and cost over $85,000 per new green job.....

telegraph complains,

It cost a lot more than that for every Blackwater and Halliburton job under the Republicans -- and we got a lot less benefit for it.

intercst: "It cost a lot more than that for every Blackwater and Halliburton job under the Republicans -- and we got a lot less benefit for it."

If you are lucky, you'll get the IRaqi oil flowing so you don't see $300/bbl oil and kill the economy even further.

China is now the number 1 car market in the world, and China will need all the oil that can be produced.

Otherwise, with no Iraqi increased oil....you'll be at $300/bbl and Obama will be instant history....

I'm sure those Halliburton paychecks got spent mostly on US goods in the USA....

I note that Obama is now fighting two wars..and looking at Somalia and Yemen as new places to wage war..

They don't seem to like him. THey aren't surrundering to HIs Excellency.....

In fact, they sense he is a weak wimp....so do the Iranians and NOrth Koreans...
