It's only real drawback is a manager just over a month on the job.VIEIX - Vanguard Extended Market Index Institutional ClassThis is a 3-star Mid Cap Blend with a 1.08% dividend yield and a low 0.08% expense ratio and a decent 17% turnover rate. It's performance has excelled during the weak market with a 7% weighted average return, although it has been relatively neutral so far this year. It's only real drawback is a manager just over a month on the job.DODBX - Dodge & Cox Balanced FundThis is a terrific 5-star Large Cap/High Yield Short-term Blend with a 2.04% dividend yield and a 0.54% expense ratio, and a decent 18% turnover rate. It's management goes back more than 30 years, keeping about 40% in cash or bonds. It shows strong historical performance with a weighted average return of 11%, and is ahead of the game so far this year.PVYYX - Putnam Voyager Fund Class YThis is a 3-star Large Cap growth fund with no dividend yield, a respectible 0.79% expense ratio, a 2 month old management team, and 46% turnover rate. It shows a low 2% weighted average return and is down for the year. Accumulation now could pay off in a bull market.RERFX - Eurpacific Growth Fund Class R-5 (American Funds)This is a 5-star Large Cap International Blend with a 1.68% dividend yield, a 0.61% expense ratio, a 20 year management lead, and a 30% turnover rate. It has a 12% weighted average yield over the last 3 years, and could be a valuable international component.PGIYX - Putnam Growth & Income Class YThis is a 3-star Large Cap Value fund with a 1.43% dividend and a 0.67% expense ratio, a 29% turnover rate, and 12 years of tenured management.The weighted average return of 7% provides decent growth, although the Vanguard Institutional Index fund provides comparable results for less.PGEYX - The George Putnam Fund of Boston Class YThis is a 4-star Large Cap Value/High Yield Intermediate-term blend with a 2.10% dividend yield, a 0.75% expense ratio, a high 166% turnover rate, and just 5 years under the longest lasting manager. A 60/40 Equity/bond allocation has provided a 7% weighted average return, although results so far this year have been above average.RWMFX - Washington Mutual Investors Class R-5 (American Funds)This is a 3-star Large Cap Value fund with a 2.15% dividend yield, a 0.39% expense ratio, a 12% turnover rate and a 27 year tenured manager. With a 6% weighted average return over the last three years, this fund has kept its nose above water so far this year.RICFX - Investment Company of America Class R-5 (American Funds)This is a 4-star Large Cap value fund with a 1.90% dividend yield, a 0.35% expense ratio, a 19% turnover rate, and 18 years under the same manager. It has used about a 15% cash reserve to generate a 7% weighted average return.If this was my 401k, and I did not have additional retirement investment accounts over which to rebalance a larger portfolio, I would probably be attracted most to DODBX, VINIX, RERFX and PGEYX. Being only 29, I would allocate my 401k contributions so that the bond content of my funds amounted to about 10% of my total, and my international allocation was about 20%.FuskieWho notes this is not his 401k and he has not been 29 in years...
