VMMXX is very convenient. I keep 5% in that fund to feed checking accounts automatically every month. So, depending on your mother's plan for the money, it's a reasonable choice that has been returning enough to keep pace if not better inflation.

I assume she has other sources of income and an allocation plan for the bulk of her investments. I use a 60/40 allocation for my 94 year old mother; 5% of the 40% is in VMMXX. The return on her fixed income secutrities exceeds her income need.
