Working in the IT business, I have to say this was one IPO I was ready to jump on…and did for 900 shares, I also have 1000 EMC since they own most of VMware (just so you know I am in this boat, not just watching from the shore).VMware has huge lead in the virtual machine market not just in market share but in industry stature. “How we work with VMware?” is a key question for every new product we release and how we plan our marketing activities. Citrix will provide some competition but they do not make the product planning and integration radar screen. I feel they will always be a distant second in a 70/30 market split. I can’t speak to comparisons to Google, but I can tell you that. VMware is just beginning in this segment and the virtual desktop game has not even begun. No one is unstoppable, but they have the best position of any IPO company I have seen in years. The ability to dynamically create virtual machines has fundamentally change server deployments, power and cooling cost and applications development in IT. VMware is one of those rare products that improve operationally efficiency and lower costs (hardware, software and human) on a game changing level. It is a strategic tool for IT shops in every business. It is a product every company needs to use or they will be less competitive than others in their fields. It is a true horizontal technology like networking, data bases, servers and storage. TMF has always been built on insight from the folks who are members. I am sure many have said this, but this will be another benchmark stock like MSFT, CSCO, GOOG and others.
