Due to the claim by a Mass. bio-tech firm that they havecloned human embryos, Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) andSenate Republican Leader Trent Lott (R-MS) will attempt towin Senate approval of legislation to prevent the cloning ofhuman embryos on Monday, Dec. 3.Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) however, hasdeclared his support for experimental cloning (the cloningof human embryos to kill them, commonly called "therapeuticcloning") and is working to block any measure that wouldrestrict the cloning of embryos.This conflict has led to a complicated procedural situation,which will end with an important procedural vote on Monday,December 3, at 5 p.m. EST.Senators Lott and Brownback have offered an amendmentbanning all human cloning for six months, to a popular billrailroad pensions bill that is moving through the Senate.
