Hi, I tried posting on verisign but it is a rather dry board with fewer than 1 message a day. I thought this might be a place to ask a question about Verisign that might relate to the whole computer software industry and the question of when is a company hype and when is it the real thing.

here is what I posted on the VRSN board

Help, I have been looking at VRSN and can't figure out some things about the company. How is it possible for a company to have -$70.94 a share in earnings. This has to be some kind of record. Although their price to book ratio is not as absurd as some companies, their profile shows them to have about~$900 million in sales and $14 billion in losses, lets not even talk about return on equity.

How is it possible that they are staying in business? Are they really going to make 20 times more money without increasing expenses? Is it just short term hype? Am I missing something? Please help me understand this stock.

I have been shorting since June on VRSN,U,YHOO,VIGN,GX for different reasons and have been doing quite well. VRSN held it's own through the bad news. What is the reason?

thanks
