With apologies to Winston Churchill, I think that perhaps the worst advertisement for Republicanism is its adherents.

How else to explain Pappi's churlish remarks? To wit:

But to the disciples of Gloria Steinem, (feminism)means:

1. All sex is rape
2. Men are evil, unless they are gay.
3. Women should be put into front line combat duty.
4. Segregated bathrooms are wrong.

So Pappi, how would you like it if I took David Duke's comments (remember him? a fellow Republican?) and claimed that all Republicans share his bilous views? That's essentially what you are doing here.

1. All (heterosexual) sex is rape.
Andrea Dworkin (herself about as far from mainstream feminism as Duke is from mainstream Republicanism) believes this. And maybe one or two others. But hardly anyone else does.

2. All men are evil (unless gay).
Huh? Sure there are some wierd, post-literate nutcases out there who might claim something like this. But most of the feminist work I've read -- even some of the more strident ones -- almost never claim ALL MEN are evil. They do, however, argue that things such as subjegation, oppression, unequal pay for equal work, the degredation of women (as in pornography) is bad, even evil.

3. Combat roles for women.
This is a subject of intense debate among feminists; some are in favor, some are opposed. To claim that Steinem's intellectual heirs speak with one voice on the issue is misleading and false.

4. Segregated bathrooms are wrong.
Oh please. I don't recall Catherine MacKinnon or any other prominent feminist even mentioning this one.

To wrap up:

* Feminism is often portrayed as a monolithic belief. Hint: it's not.

* The popular understanding of debates within feminism is skewed by the media's focus on controversy and sensationalism, which leads it to give more weight to some of the fringe elements (who of course both feed and benefit from the media fascination). When W. is talking about relying more on "faith-based" iniatives, do you think he is talking about handling snakes?

* Feminists (who are not all women :-) do share a core of beliefs based on the idea that men and women have an equal claim to the rights enumerated by the constitution. (Debate begins over the nature of "equal treatment".)

Let's finish by repeating (again) with bookgrrrl:

Feminism means believing you are not a doormat. Feminism means believing in equality between men and women. Feminism means enjoying relationships (including heterosexual ones) based on respect and mutuality.
