Warning: what I'm about to post will be very unpopular, and is totally un-PC. But someone has to say it.

Overpopulation is the greatest threat to our environment. It is the root cause of every environmental woe in the news today, from global warming to peak oil.

Two bio kids is fine, as there are enough people like me who don't ever intend to have any. More than that, however...well, I'm sure I've already inflamed passions, so I'll stop there.

Do people have the right to have more than two children. Sure. As they have the right to drive gas-guzzling SUVs, as they have the right to max out their credit cards then declare bankruptcy. But having that right doesn't make exercising that right right.

I don't believe mandating family size, ala China, is a good solution. I'd rather small families be achieved by education and readily available family planning and contraception.

(I was thrilled to see, in the latest Utne Magazine, an article decrying overpopulation. I just hope more and more people work up the courage to say what has to be said. Now I'm off to don my asbestos underwear :-))
