Was Carter a great President? Perhaps not.

Remember all the endless sky-jackings that were taking place during his term? One thing Carter did was to put a stop to it. As he explained in a speech that I saw him give during the Guld War, he wrote a letter to the leaders of the nations that were likely sponsoring the sky-jackers, and told them that it had to stop, or all air traffic would cease to their nations. The letter was also signed by other world leaders, but its existence was kept secret so that the shady leaders could save face. A direct order in front of the whole world would never have worked, because they couldn't be seen as backing down. So Carter was willing to do the right thing behind the scenes knowing that he could never take credit for it while running for re-election.
