Was going through taxes and publication 501 says you need to file if unearned income is greater than $850.

Last year must have misread and used the wrong column were it said for over 65.

This is for a kid who was 15 last year. As a consequence, nothing was filed for 2006. Unearned income was $970 for 2006.

What needs to be done for 06? Amended 2006 return?

You can't amend a return that was never filed. Just pull out the 2006 forms and file the return. You can find the 2006 forms at the IRS website (you may have to search a bit to find prior year forms, but they're there.)
