<<WASHINGTON — A new book says President Barack Obama hoped to put Osama bin Laden on trial, showing the U.S. commitment to due process under law, if the al-Qaida leader had surrendered during a U.S. raid in Pakistan last year.>>

If Obama really intended to put Bin Laden on trial, he proves himself a fool more interested in "teaching" the world a law school lesson than managing the affairs of the United States.

We have seen plenty of evidence of how dangerous raw political appeals in Moslem countries can be in recent weeks. Giving Bin Laden a forum to stir up trouble on an international scale would have been hugely foolish.

I am willing to suppose that the claim in this book is false, and that Obama preferred Bin Laden dead, the way he got him. This would be consistent with Obama's campaign of assassination by drone, which I also approve.

It's all very well for the ACLU to file all the lawsuits it wants to stir up liberal interest groups, but when it comes to the national security interests of the United States, responsibility for doing the nation's wet work starts with the President.
