I'm trying to do some research into what companies claim to have IPR on wcdma. Of course there is a difference between IPR and essential IPR. So far my findings are:

According to http://www.itu.int/imt/2-radio-dev/proposals/j/j.pdf posted by Chapman208.

Companies with IPR that relate to the wcdma standard according to this posted link. Qualcomm's does not include duplicates. I counted only original patents.

Airtouch 15
CASIO 2
DDI 1
Fujitsu 4
Hitachi 3
Matsushita 6
Mitsubishi 1
Motorola 10
NEC 2
Nokia 5
NTT 39
OKI 5
Samsung 3
Siemens 2
Sony 8
TI 1
Qualcomm 163

Now these are just the companies that are listed on this document. There are other companies who also claim to have IPR rights to 3g. These include

IDC (does Nokia also have claim to some of idc patents?)
Adicom
Ericcson

UMTS IPR Working Group include:

AirTouch Communications, Bell Atlantic Mobile, Bell Mobility, Bell South Cellular Corp., Cable and Wireless, China Telecom, De Te Mobil, DDI Corporation, IDO Corporation, NTT DoCoMo, Sprint PCS, SingTel Mobile, Telia Mobile, Telecom Italia Mobile

Other could include ??

Nortel
Lucent

What about chinese companies? Especially in regard to td-scdma?

According to the etsi website, for those that don't know what etsi is:

ETSI (the European Telecommunications Standards Institute) is a non-profit making organization whose mission is to produce the telecommunications standards that will be used for decades to come throughout Europe and beyond.

http://www.etsi.org/IPRDb/iprcomp.idc
