We both come from families with mix of blue and white collars - but we are forward thinking and believe that an advanced education will continue to be even more critical in the future and so we naturally worry about our child's ability to be self sufficient in adulthood.

I'm not so sure that advanced education will be critical in the future--look at all the white collar work being outsourced to India. You know Seattle Pioneer, don't you? He's retired early after a career in furnace repair. Plumbing is another good choice.

Also, our community college system offers a lot of career programs: auto mechanics, cooking school, carpentry, etc. I think one gets an AA degree along with the training. Check it out.
