We had an employee "town meeting/awards ceremony" yesterday. Always a good event because our Director gets to present a variety of special awards recognizing exceptional or "above and beyond" efforts from individuals and teams throughout the organization. Keep in mind that we are predominantly made up of software engineers and IT specalists. It was painfully obvious that some of the engineers "get it" and some don't.

A number who went up to recieve the award were dressed smartly in business suits (men and women) and looked really professional as they were recognized. Another segment of the employees looked like they just crawled in from an all-nighter at the college rathskellar. As I observed the event, I thought to myself, "how hard would it have been to put on a shirt and tie, or god forbid, a business suit for the occasion??" In fact, one guy I work with put on the suit for the ceremony, and then swithched back to more casual, but still professional, attire for the rest of the day.

Its just amazing to me that these folks have so little pride in their appearance that they couldn't take the time to "dress up" just once for a special event. Amazing.
