We learned about cooking, sewing, changing diapers, coupons, color schemes for decorating, reading food labels, and one little unit on balancing a checkbook.

They called it Home Ec when I took it, but they didn't include the balancing a checkbook part. When I got to the point where I needed to balance a checkbook I asked my mother to show me. And I've said before that more students should get some basic financial education in high school 2gifts always says no, it's too costly, but considering the incredible financial damage people have done to themselves and the economy lately, it would be worth the price.

Despite some really horrible math skills I did manage to get an A in Geometry. Stunned the family. But multipying two digit numbers still causes me to stumble; that's why I carry a calculator. That's why I come to the boards to ask basic questions.

But some of the basic principles (don't buy a house more than twice your yearly income, always put money aside for emergencies, don't run into debt) were part of my growing up. I don't know how to teach that part to people. Or rather, we can teach it. But I don't know how to make them learn it.
