We pay 20% of the total UN expenses. That means that the US taxpayers
paid one dollar out of every 5 dollars of that UN officials salary.

Actually it's worse than that. We pay 22% of the UN budget. Wow, how amazingly generous.

Of course Japan, with a smaller economy and 1/2 the number of people pays 19%, so each Japanese citizen is paying twice what you are. Oh, and Japan doesn't have a veto on the Security Council.

Germany pays 10% and has about one-fourth the population. Each German citizen is paying twice what you are, too. France pays 6.5% and has one-fifth the population, and Britain pays about the same as France with a slightly smaller population. Each citizen of those countries pays more than you do, and has fewer privileges within the organization. The simple truth is that we don't "own" the UN, and sometimes, when you join a larger organization, you don't always get your own way.

On a "per capita" basis, we pay LESS than any of those others, yet we have the far richer economy.

I'll admit we pay more than Somalia and probably more than Egypt, too. How unfair!

Did I hear right that France is contributing less than $150,000
toward the Asian disaster relief effort? BWaahhh!

No, you did not. France, with 1/5 our population, has pledged $20 million. Spain has pledged $68 million. Great Britain is at $30 million. Japan? $30 million. The United States? $35 million. Certainly there will be more - at least I hope there will be more from us. The President has pledged "other assistance" including "military manpower" and "damage assessment teams". I'm thinking "food" would be a good one too.

By the way, have you contributed anything? Go to amazon.com or apple.com or any number of other places and put something in the pot. You want to complain about generous? Feel free to bypass the UN and give to one of the many relief organizations that is helping out.
