we really don't think about anything when deciding. We just fool ourselves into thinking we do.

Even if all our decisions are predetermined by our subconscious - which I think is pure horsepuckey that you're taking way out of context - its beside the point. Whether our decisions are predetermined or not - the issue is, who is the "we" that you refer to as being aware of those decisions? That is consciousness.

If we are zombies, with our subconscious making all the decisions, then what need is there for another brain layer to busy itself being fooled about "our" decisions - already made - ain't gonna change?

The decisions are made, zombie! Cut the crap, just march! Go get those sleeping suburbanites!

Would seem a more efficient evolutionary model.
