at the last cellular systems for Verizon, Sprint in this area...

Hey, maybe you could answer I question I've been wondering about for some time. (Off topic.) Could one build a device which would pick up the current date and time from some nearby cell tower, without needing to have an account (or SIM card, or anything like that)?

That is, if I knew all the relevant standards and bought, say, an Arduino card with a cell radio, could I program the Arduino to display the current date and time? (Given that I have many years of experience in embedded systems programming.) Or do you have to "log in" somehow before you can get that info?

The NIST time transmission is really hard to pick up in California, and GPS receivers are expensive and don't tell the time zone (at least not without a ton of map data).
