Well, I finally have an update. I talked with an independent investment/tax guy, and he said the same thing; that if I switched companies, I would have to empty the account in 5 years. He could not give me a straight answer as to why other than it is illegal. The good news is that just this month, American Enterprise instituted a new "inherited IRA" option. By stalling on choosing a payout option, I finally have available what I really wanted. Now, I can take RMDs over my lifetime. Now I just have to make sure I understand RMDs correctly.
