Well, I live in the PNW -- and believe me it's not in the middle of nowhere. There are all kinds of outdoor sports to be had here -- and the climate is surprisingly mild.
Where?
I think I'd like Seattle, but I think it's almost as expensive there as here.
Keep in mind that "middle of nowhere" means different things to different people. Debbie and I like the things that come with a city, though to be honest we've don't go to things like plays here. We do go to plays in New York now and then with her parents, and no doubt we'd do more of that if we lived there, but NY is ridiculously expensive. And crowded by comparison with where we live.
Outdoor sports aren't really our thing. Except for SCUBA, which requires travel, period.

I live on the Olympic peninsula across the sound from Seattle. Much better weather over here -- believe it or not. We get WAAAAY less than half the rain they get in Seattle. WA state has no income tax so that's a nice touch. But there are other taxes (there is no getting away from the fact that communities do need money in order to operate).
Summers here are so fantastic you can't believe it. And the winters are mild. I figured up it cost me only $1000 to heat my house (and also cook) in all of 2006. (I use propane)
Light bill is about $35 a month.
