What about getting cross-trained in underwriting and/or loss control to give you a bigger picture of the business? As a side benefit, you'd get to know people who might be helpful in progressing your career.

With company politics around your department (or does it go all the way up?), you might want to move to one of those departments some day. If there's any licensing/credentialing involved in underwriting or loss control, so much the better. Extra credentials might be quite beneficial for promotion or if you decide the politics are too much and seek to go elsewhere.

Good thought, and I've put some of that on my plan. But it's also where some of the weird politics comes in. ("What? What's wrong with OUR department? There are plenty of opportunities here... we hired you to be in THIS department and now you want to be in THAT department?" Hasn't happened to me, but I've seen it happen to others).

I need to go with the flow better. Like I said, this is a good "problem" to have. They like me, they want to develop me, they don't want me to leave. Lots of people have it a lot worse! And I like what I do. I hate the idea of putting in time until I retire, which is a long way off, but I'm not exactly in the dawn of my career, either.

You guys have given me a lot of good ideas--I'll let you know how it goes!
