What actually is Java used for? When you want to be able to write the code once, and run it on a variety of systems without the hassle of recompiling for any number of $OS and $ARCH variables. There isn't a whole lot of this given how (despite Mac fanboi's protestations otherwise) $OS is generally Win6.1 or higher, and $ARCH is nearly always i586 or compatible. However, there are folks out there who cater to diverse environments, where $OS could be Windows, OSX, Linux, or BSD, and $ARCH could be practically anything built in the last ten years. In those cases, Java put together with free standards like OpenGL can be a godsend.
