What an awful situation.

With her limited income there is no way she can pay for a mortgage on that house. And, given she is upside down on it, there is even more reason to let it go.

On the other hand, I have heard of several families who haven't paid a cent on their mortgage for years and are still residing in their homes without a peep from the bank. I doubt this is common however.

Is there a social worker that might help your sister to understand her situation? She might be more willing to take info. from someone outside the family, as is often the case.
