... to retire early than to spend your time and wealth helping other people?

I sincerely hope that I can retire young enough, and with enough financial wherewithal to go back and volunteer like I did when I was younger.

I still think of it as the best year of my life when I spent my days changing diapers and getting puked on by babies awaiting adoption in Colombia.

No one paid me to do it. I lived pretty frugally, so I could stay longer, and I loved my volunteer "job" as well as the opportunity to get to know another culture and its ways.

Thanks all for building the board. I'll probably lurk a lot and post a little - but hopefully my contributions will meet at least one of the TMF critera.
