What do you think about summer programs? I'm looking at a Johns Hopkins CTY summer program for my daughter and was thinking we might have to use coverdell funds to pay for it

AFAIK there are no special provisions regarding summer programs. I would think your qualified educational institution criterion is met. Pub 970 tells you what expenses are qualified educational expenses.
