What I struggle with is index and mutual funds. I want my portfolio to include a healthy smattering of index funds but I don't necessarily want to own Monsanto and Haliburton. So do I sleep at night saying to myself "Well at least I didn't directly purchase Altria, I just own it through a layer of abstraction." Yes, yes I do, only because I'm a pretty moderate guy.If you really want to be responsible with where your money goes, you need to think beyond the piddly amount we as individuals invest in stocks and think more about what our government does with our tax money.. funding wars, swaying global politics, smashing third world economies, etc.For that reason I choose my own SRI companies, I invest in a few SRI funds whose criteria I agree with, I invest in index funds, I don't sweat that my 401k only has a few fund choices and none match my ethical criteria. But I support SRI decisions. I think that just the mere fact that SRI exists means there has been a change in thinking and that little drop will turn into a flood eventually. I'm a happy enough to be a little drip right now.
