What if it etrade says I didn't fund my IRA in 2006 even though I did?
Might I get myself into trouble if I do fund the account?

I suspect that somewhere down the line, the IRS will prod eTrade to correct its records, and all will be resolved.

Overcontributing to an IRA is subject to a 6% excise tax each year the money remains in the account (until you withdraw the money or designate it as part of that year's contributions).
