What is the point of having such things as security clearances if people can just decide on their own that something needs to be divulged to the press?

So by that logic the government can do anything it wants as long as it gets people who won't blab about it.

I think a good analogy would be a soldier ordered to shoot unarmed civilians. He has a duty to disobey an illegal order. The monitoring programs of the NSA appear (and I say "appear" because I don't even pretend to have all the details) to have been illegal. In which case I think a government worker has a duty to report it, clearance or not. Now whether Snowden did that "properly" is yet another question.

But then this is why I started the poll. :-)
