What was the 16 designed for?

Originally, I think it was designed for downed Air Force pilots, as a light weight, compact weapon for self-defense in enemy territory - could be wrong.

Seriously? You want people to believe that an "assault weapon" was designed for pilots to jump with? That's laughable, and "assault" and "self-defense" have different meanings. Look them up.

Maybe you should look up what the weapon was originally designed for. I was ripe for the draft at the time and knew such things more than I cared to.

According to Col. David H. Hackworth in the book “About Face” the M16 was first designed to be an Air Force survival rifle...

Originally, it was also very prone to jamming.
