What's to prevent Sony from going out with Blue Ray for HD-DVD anyway?

It's certainly possible, but not likely. Keep in mind that representatives from the different format manufacturers are the voting members of the DVD Forum, and the whole point of the Forum is to decide on a standard for HD-DVD. The assumption is that the studios will support whoever the DVD Forum supports.

Obviously, anything could happen over the next few years, but this is the biggest news about HD-DVD in a long time.

If the Blu-Ray developers whip out an amazing copyright protection technology I'm sure the movie studios will forget all about AOD.

Blu-Ray recorders are already available in Japan, and they cost a bit over 3 grand. If I recall correctly, the blank Blu-Ray discs are about 30 dollars.

Everybody wants to avoid what happened when DVD was competing against Divx. Divx was a horrible idea, and it confused the heck out of consumers.
