When I retire I plan on continuing my membership with the modern arts and the fine arts museums because they offer free lectures during the week that I would like to attend.

Leolo, nice to see you on this board! I'm really enjoying the mood of this board, and I welcome your participation here.

You might want to check about volunteer work at the museum. One of the things I want to do one of these days is look into volunteering at a local theatre:

This 1926 performance hall is a rich part of Durham's history - the last remaining of 13 original theatres in Durham. Lovingly restored, it is the only historic theatre in the country to boast as part of its complex two fully operating state-of-the-art cinemas.

If you volunteer at this theatre, tickets to events are free, and some other bennies:

Top 10 Reasons To Be A Carolina Theatre Volunteer:

10. Be a part of the revitalization of Downtown Durham
9. Annual volunteer party and awards
8. Variety of volunteer opportunities
7. Meet and mingle with artists, staff and audiences
6. Complimentary cinema passes
5. Create your own schedule
4. Free admission to events when ushering or taking tickets
3. Give back to the community
2. Expand your circle of friends
1. Free popcorn and soft drinks while volunteering

When I was in high school, I was an usher for the city symphony and got to attend all of the concerts for free. This was a very big deal to me, as I could never have afforded to go otherwise. I could also take a friend for free. We had to sit in the balcony section, but we'd spy out good seats that remained empty on the main floor. Then after the intermission, we'd go get those prime seats. Being able to go to the symphony at that age is one of the fonder memories of my youth.
