When I retired, I had a choice of buying an annuity w/ my 401k savings, or rolling over my 401k into an IRA. I chose the latter. I'm not sure how long people will have that choice.

Of course, I was building my 401k savings when companies were matching employee savings up to a certain percentage. For me that percentage was 50% of my contributions. Of course my contributions were capped by a complicated formula that determined that I wasn't a high earner and couldn't contribute more than X% of my salary.

Many companies have dropped the match entirely.
