I am going to have to move a significant part of my portfolio into income producing assets over the next few years to produce retirement income.

I am concerned about moving into bonds now because of the low yields and I expect that interest rates will rise again before long, killing the value of bonds.

How are folks dealing with these issues of low yields and price instability? Are there alternative vehicles/strategies to consider in a market like this.

I would also like to educate myself about fixed income investing in general in order to make good choices.

Suggestions for reading, web resources, etc will be appreciated.
