Which Motley Fool service did you sign up for? Each newsletter or service has multiple boards tied to it. For example, the Income Investor newsletter will have a special board for every stock recommendation they make.

As to some general advice, what discount brokerage service do you have an account with? Being a small investor, you want to find a brokerage with the lowest commissions possible so as not to cut in to your profits excessively. Also, a brokerage with minimal or no account fees. Your calculations above may indicate an overly expensive broker.

Also, if you are investing in individual stocks, you may want to invest in larger blocks than $400. When I started seriously investing in 1999, I would invest no less than $1000 at a time in a single recommended stock. So do a little math....if brokerage commission is $10, that's 1% out of $1000, but 2% out of $500.

As to the number of positions you should have, the big thing is you don't want to have so many positions you can't keep track of them all. That may vary depending on whether you're working or retired, single or with multiple family obligations, etc. As to making multiple investments in the same stock -- dollar cost averaging -- it only makes sense. You may have invested in the finest stock in the world, but if that stock takes it on the chin during a market correction, your initial reaction might be to worry. An experienced investor might see an opportunity to get more of the same great company at a lower price (provided the correction didn't indicate something severely wrong with the company you invested in).

Anyhow, good luck! If you tell me what service you're with, I might be able to tell you what to look for.
