While FEDERAL capital gains are at a low point, California taxes capital gains as income, and the OP is likely in California (eBay is HQ'd in the SF Bay area>. The top bracket is 9.3%, so the total tax would be something around 24%. That 2.4M to the OP! I bet even he thinks thats a lot of money.

While I absolutely do not trust brokers, it would certainly be worthwhile to look at some tax avoidance ideas.
