While my equipment is somewhat different than yours, I ran into the same issue. HDMI cables will handle both sound and video - but I was told by Apple is was not possible to send audio from my MacBook Pro to the TV with this arrangement. My options were #1 AirPlay to an Apple TV or #2 Get an audio cable from the MBP's 3.5 mm audio port to the TV. Both methods worked. I have found good prices, excellent service and high quality for cables and similar items at -- which is where I got the audio cable.

That's odd. I was told by the Apple guy at the Exchange that since mine was new (bought it this year) that it would push both sound and picture through the MiniDisplay port.

Of these options, using the AppleTV works the best in my view. Don't know when/where you got the MiniDisplay to HDMI cable, but returning that will go a ways to buying an AppleTV. In your cable is an Apple cable, taking it to an Apple store and swapping for an AppleTV probably will work.

I bought a non-Apple cable at the Exchange for 30 bucks. AppeTV is not an option here in Germany so that's out for me.

Thanks for the reply.
