Approximately 3 years ago I was the victim of a violent crime. I filed a civil suit and won. Now we go into negotiations the first week of April. My attorney quoted the suit as being "a possible million dollar deal".My attorney says I must pay taxes on the money, although he is not a tax law advisor. My educated tax friend says it is unearned income and therefore, I do not have to pay taxes on the money.Who is correct?
