Why does government need to be in the business of recognizing and acknowledging marriages?A better question would be why do religions need to be in the business of recognizing and acknowledging marriages? A marriage is a legal contract. between consenting adults. The term "marriage" and "spouse" have legal definitions and the marriage relationship important to our legal system when dealing with many issues: inheritances, power of attorney, testifying in court, pursuit of debts, etc. So why are religious groups getting involved on who can and can not get married? Okay, and why is it necessary to automatically grant such rights?Because it covers all those "We forgot about it" issues. One document takes care of it. Plus there are things where the spouse has to sign saying yes he/she gives up his/her rights (like being the beneficiary to your retirement plan) so Sleazy Spouse couldn't sneak into the HR office and refill out the beneficiary form with her new lover's name unbeknownst to the husband.Lara Amber
