Could someone explain why the price of OCLI has skyrocketed recently? Is it the planned merger with JDSU? And even though the price has leapt upward, the volume hasn't been exceptionally large. Thanks.

dlight44:

Q. "Could someone explain why the price of OCLI has skyrocketed recently?"
A. possibly, though i've been incorrect before

Q."Is it the planned merger with JDSU?"
A. absolutely. jdsu is a dominant player in a cutting edge market (fiber optic systems, the stuff all out 'net and telecom systems run through). telecom stocks and net stocks have been out of sight recently, but they couldn't exist without infrastructure - which is jdsu's bag of candy.

Observation: "And even though the price has leapt upward, the volume hasn't been exceptionally large."
Speculation: since jdsu and ocli are essentially synonomous, i suspect most people are buying in at the source (ie jdsu). also, late buyers into ocli are not guaranteed jdsu shares - but, having made that cut, i confess i haven't been paying attention to when that date is. if you are contemplating getting in on the action, i'd probably go straight to jdsu.

Gratitude:"Thanks."
Disclaimer: no problem. just remember cheap free advice is just that.

good luck

caveman,
Just a minor correction,
late buyers into ocli are not guaranteed jdsu shares

If you hold OCLI shares, even if bought at 3:59 on the effective date, your shares will be converted to JDSU. Once the merger is effected, each share of OCLI stock will become 1.852 (if memory serves correctly) shares of JDSU. If there are delays in the merger until after March, when JDSU is splitting again, the ratio will increase.

And, yes, you are correct in stating that OCLI is in lockstep with JDSU because of the merger. The slight difference is due to the risk that the merger might not be comsumated.

Caveman,
Unfortunately the merger date is not yet fixed. The shareholder's meeting is scheduled for this next week. The vote take on the merger will be delayed.

If you noticed an article I posted last week following JDSU/ETEK merger announcement there will be a revised statement forthcoming to let us know how it impacts the OCLI shareholders. This statement should be in our mailboxes in a couple of days. Once that is accomplished, I suspect, we will be asked again to approve the merger. The statement may contain another ballot.

My best guess for the merger at the moment - probably late February or early March. But there could be delays. However, I am confident it will be approved.

Don
