Why we can expect Rupert Grint to only play Rupert Grint, and that's not a good thing.
He plays a pot smoking slacker who bears a striking resemblence to what Ron Weasely would be like without Hermione and Harry around and stoned on weed most of the time. In short, his range is very narrow as an actor. I will not see anything just because he's in it. Thankfully, he was just a supporting character here.
As always, I love watching Bill Nighy. He's had a nack of picking very fun characters, or maybe playing boring characters really well.
I'm not a fan of Emily Blunt, and this movie did nothing to dispell this. Given her performances in the past, it felt like she was phoning this one in where as Bill was actually putting forth an effort.
Generally a fun movie but it felt like it was hitting the wrong note, like one more line or prop or scene and it would all click. But it never comes. Again, Bill's character was fun, but that wasn't enough to carry this weak movie.
One Spoiler question below:
And also, how the hell did the mom get up the stairs, first in the house, next in the barn, when she's in a wheelchair? At first I thought they were going for a "even in a wheelchair she's still a badd@$$, but now I don't think so. Instead, it just came across as preposterous, and was one more off note to the whole thing.
