Been planting my rye for this year. If this year goes like the last, for new England, this will be a boon for the deer. Last year the rye was up to 12 inches by the end of November. By the end of December, it was down to about 1 inch. There was no other food for the deer to eat except for bushes around the house. in my case while my neighbors yards were being striped of bushes mine were not touched much.

the winter rye is easy to plant. I just mowed the area, put down 10/10/10 fertilizer and walked the area as I hand seeded about 200 pounds. now it is poking up about 3 inches already. the turkeys ate some but not much. interesting enough in the spring the rye grew back and went to seed for the turkey and other critters to eat.

Last year I planted about 1/4 acre. this year about an acre. So you don't have to do too much to help. and in my case the bonus is that the white clover also grew up under it to keep the ground in place.
