With a small amount like 8K is it premature to be talking about the FF and RM and RB?

As a general guideline, some people like to spend not more than 1% on commisions. Some people put that number as high as 2.5%. In any case, if you were going for the 1%, with $8000 you could spend $80 on trades. With 2% you could spend $160 on the transaction fees. Transaction fees should not be a large percentage of your portfolio, but it all really depends on what you're comfortable with.
