WLarimer,

1. I'm running Win98 on a Compaq with an AMD K6-2/450. Windows won't shut down properly. The system hangs up on the "Windows is shutting down" screen, and I never get the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" screen. Any suggestions?

This problem comes up a lot (maybe this should go in the FAQ?). There are three Microsoft articles that are helpful.

The first is the aptly-named "How to Troubleshoot Windows 98 Shutdown Problems" http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q202/6/33.ASP

The second is "Problems Shutting Down Windows 98 Second Edition" http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/0/96.ASP

The third, and often most helful, is "Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement" http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q239/8/87.ASP which includes a downloadable patch. However, it only work with Win98se (Second Edition), so if you're not running se you may have to update to it first.

Those articles have helped many people solve their shutdown problems with Win98. You may find that shutdown problems cannot be completely solved, however. Some people, myself included, have found that occasional shutdown problems continue, and switching to Win2000 solves them. Of course, changing operating systems may not be a desirable or practical solution. But if you are thinking about changing operating systems anyway, then if you're having shutdown problems in Win98, the fact that they will probably be solved with Win2000 can be another factor in your decision process.
