The Pope's resignation has more to do with the super-secretive, scandal-ridden, money-laundering, Vatican Bank and its past and present relationship than any pedophile scandal. That being said I have just finished reading this book. The Pursuit of Italyhttp://www.amazon.com/The-Pursuit-Italy-History-Regions/dp/0...It was on The Economist's list of 2011 best books.I found it while browsing the books in my local liabrary.Besides Gilmour postulating, that it was a mistake for modern day Italy ever trying to unite its multiple communes under one flag, for a long list of reasons (mostly wrong reasons poorly implemented) it is very encompassing in tying together Italy's history in the past and present, how Mussolini started out as a left winger, then a right winger. After being strung up by the left wingers, the left wingers the proceeded to adopt his tactics.Enveloped in this whole drama is how the Christian democrats (now defunct but reinvented themselves several times over) made, has made, and continues to make unholy alliances communists, fascists, and the mafia. The political system in Italy is to blame for all this chaos, more than its ordinary citizens, because of Party(s) control of who they are even allowed to vote for.Meanwhile our own money laundering bailed out banks along with other banks throughout the world who have had very cozy relationships with all these players in the past are now too breathing down The Vatican Bank's neck, because afterall it's not fair they have to disclose what they are up to, while The Vatican hides behind sovereign secrecy.Add to that the mafiosas don't take kindly to all of these players losing their money, and have no preference who they bump off in any of the parties or The Vatican, not to mention blackmail (because all are as guilty as sin), I think we can all get a pretty good picture of who really is running things.BTW a lot of this money ended up in US real estate, so we will most likely not be too harsh on any of the playersAnyhow, Italy is having its election today with most there feeling it doesn't matter who wins.http://www.forbes.com/sites/realspin/2012/06/26/the-vatican-...
