Would someone at TurboTax (Intuit) and TaxAct also need to be qualified to prepare tax returns?

They don't prepare tax returns; they provide software for people who do. They do have tax professionals in the company, for the technical aspects. But the person at tech support who answers the phone likely isn't one of them. But he might know somebody who is.


I was not concerned about the people who answered the telephones. I was concerned about those that wrote and updated the TurboTax and TaxAct programs to be sure they understood the law and regulations enough to ensure the programs were correct.

(I do not envy those guys. The bozos in congress who write the tax law one year did not get it done until December and it did not get signed until even later, so they could not finish the software until sometime in January and were doing updates for a coupla munce after that. People who like to file early could not. Or if they tried it, some likely had to file amended returns.)
