Wow! I wish I had this dilemna! Regarding the reliability issue, you probably know that Consumer Reports recently gave the nod to the Passat as best family car. In the past, reliability had kept the VW out of the running, but in recent years they have put out a more reliable product. In general, cars today are far less prone to problems than cars built only ten years ago.

Regarding your choice, it sounds like you really want the Passat, but want the bullet proof reputation of the Accord. Tough Call! If it were me, I would get the Passat, no question. First, the Passat is just such a fabulously designed car- it is much closer to an Audi than the VWs of past. Materials, workmanship, its all there. Second, the car drives like a tight German engineered car. As fun as the Accord is, it drives like a .....Honda. Which is fine, but if you want the Euro-feel, you gotta go Euro.

The main reason, however, that I would probably get the Passat if I was in your shoes is this: The Passat is still a relatively niche vehicle. Honda will sell more Accords than VW will sell CARS in the U.S. The Accord is routinely the number one selling car, or at least within the top three. What I love about the Passat is that it looks different, feels different, and there simply are not as many of them on the road. And lets face it, they are way cooler

Seriously, any of the three would be a great choice.
